Gardoš Tower in Zemun, Belgrade

The History of Gardoš Tower
Gardoš Tower was built in 1896 to commemorate the 1,000th anniversary of the arrival of the Hungarian tribes in the Pannonian Plain. It was constructed on Gardoš Hill, within the remains of the former Zemun fortress.
The tower is approximately 36 metres high and combines historic architectural elements, with Romanesque influences particularly visible in its design. Together with the old streets and historic buildings surrounding it, the tower gives Gardoš a distinctive character that makes this part of Zemun different from central Belgrade.
The official name of the monument is Millennium Tower, while the name Gardoš Tower became widely used because of its location on Gardoš Hill.
Although the tower is sometimes called the Tower of John Hunyadi, this connection is historically misleading. János Hunyadi, known in Serbian tradition as Sibinjanin Janko, died at the location centuries before the present tower was built.
